Sound Rowers Great Cross Sound Challenge, August, 2000

Here are some pictures I took during the Great Cross Sound Challenge Race in my Escapade pedal propelled boat. The race is held by the Sound Rowers. It starts at Alki Beach in West Seattle on Puget Sound, travels to Blakely Rock, which is just off the shores of Bainbridge Island, then turns south to Waverly Reef before returning across the Sound to Alki. One hundred and thirteen (113) boats completed the course. I finished in 104th place, but first in the pedal boat class.

These shots are at the starting line of the race. Most of the other boats were kayaks or racing shells of one sort or another.

My last view of most of the racers prior to the finish line.

As the race wore on, I managed to catch up to and pass this group of kayaks. After rounding Waverly Reef, however, the 16 year old passed me and made it to the finish line with a five minute lead.

Near Blakely Rock a pair of these birds could be seen fishing and flying about. Of course, the moment I took out my camera they both decided to head to the hinterlands.
