Recent Escapade, Cadence and Other Boat Cruises

This page links to pictures and stories of cruises I took in 2003 in my Escapade and Cadence pedal propelled boats.

Taking Matt out for a spin on Lakes Union and Washington near the 520 bridge, February 1, 2003. The story can be found here, or pictures only here.

La Conner race with the Sound Rowers. Very windy, lots of waves and strong currents. February 15, 2003. My photos and Bill Evers' photos can be seen. The story is here.

Lake Sammamish race with the Sound Rowers. Somewhat windy, some whitecaps and no currents. March 15, 2003. My wife's photos are here and a story is here.

American Lake Classic race with the Sound Rowers. Light breeze, overcast and no currents. April 12, 2003. Photos are here and a story is here.

Lake Whatcom Classic race with the Sound Rowers. Calm, overcast, light sprinkles and no currents. April 19, 2003. Photos are here and a story is here.

Commencement Bay race with the Sound Rowers in a Cadence. Calm, overcast, and no detected currents. May 10, 2003. Photos are here and a story is here.

San Juan Challenge/Cypress Island race with the Sound Rowers in a Cadence. Mostly calm (except for some cool tide current rips), mostly overcast, and some helpful and not helpful currents. May 17, 2003. Photos are here and a story is here.

Sound Rowers Manchester Race in a Cadence. Not too rough, somewhat overcast, and some helpful and not helpful currents and WEEDS! June 21, 2003. Photos are here and a story is here.

Sound Rowers Rat Island Regatta in a Cadence. Not very rough, not a cloud in the sky, and some helpful and not helpful currents and breeze! June 28, 2003. Photos are here and a story is here.

Sound Rowers Quartermaster Harbor Regatta in a (drum roll, please) Cadence. Flat, mostly overcast for the first half, broiling with the sun and a tailwind on the return leg. July 20, 2003. The story is here and photos are here.

Sound Rowers Elk River Challenge in a beautiful wine-colored Cadence. Flat, almost completely sunny, with a northerly breeze and temperatures in the mid 70's (F). With all the twists and turns it was not too hot for too long. July 26, 2003. Photos are here and the story is here.

Sound Rowers Round Shaw Row in my Cadence. Mostly flat, almost completely gray and drizzling, with not much breeze and temperatures in the mid 60's (F). I went clockwise, and most everyone else went counterclockwise. Even with the drizzle it was a fun race. August 9, 2003. Photos are here and here. The story is here.

Sound Rowers Great Cross Sound Race in my Cadence. Mostly flat, almost completely blue skies, with not much breeze and temperatures in the mid 60's (F). Had to stop and remove weeds, and cut my foot on some rocks in the process. August 23, 2003. The story is here. Photos are here.

Sound Rowers Bainbridge Island Marathon Race in my Cadence. Mostly flat, scattered clouds to almost completely blue skies, with not much breeze and temperatures in the mid 70's (F). Stopped once to check out my weed removal device (which was working well!), and encountered many floating weeds and weed mats. September 6, 2003. Photos are here, and the story is here.

A weekend cruise in Mercer Slough in my Cadence, testing out the weed removal device amongst all the milfoil and other weeds prevalent in the area. September 13, 2003.

Sound Rowers Budd Inlet Race in my Cadence. Very flat water, clear blue skies, with very little breeze and temperatures in the upper 70's (F). Took my youngest son along for the ride! Encountered many jellyfish, a seal and a salmon. September 27, 2003. Photos are here and a story is here.

Sound Rowers Lake Samish Salmon Roe Race in my Cadence. Very flat water, foggy gray skies, with very little breeze and temperatures in the upper 50's (F). Started with an OK back, but the camera around my neck turned it into torture about halfway back. Still, exceeded the 200 miles on water point for this year! October 4, 2003. Photos are here and a story is here.

Sound Rowers Medina-Mercer Sausage Pull Race in my Cadence. Sometimes rough water, drizzle or gray skies, with light southerly breeze and temperatures in the lower 50's (F). Started pretty fast, but began getting a pounding headache about halfway to the I-90 bridge. Took it easier on the way back, ending up in 10th place for the short course. Afterwards went 5 more miles, taking photos of people finishing the short course after me and on the long course. October 11, 2003. Photos are here and a story is here.

The last Sound Rowers race of the year: Cascade Distance Race in my Cadence, and my wife and two kids in my Escapade. Lots of chop, wind from the side, but clear skies and a mostly tail wind on the return. My wife tried to enter the short course race in our Escapade, but got hung up on the sand bars and flood debris between the boat launch on the Cedar River and the start of the race at the Boat House. Temperatures were in the upper 40's to lower 50's (F). Started late, passed a bunch of boats while not working at my normal race speed. Stopped to assist an overturned boat on the return. October 25, 2003. Photos are here and a story is here.
